Idea

1.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmjPrdTNxQ0&ob=av2e

i like the idea of rewinding back time. We could possibly do something along the lines of this video but in terms of the guy and girls relationship- where it has taken them and taking it back to when they first met.

2. like the video Eilisha posted "vermillion" where we can do something like a motion blur. We could try to get a scene of a street in belfast and do a time lapse, where people are rushing past and cars an=re going by. We could then get shots of the guy and girl standing together in front a green screen. then merge the two together. the output would look like time is passing but they are still together- representing how time is changing but how they are still together.
Location: Donegall Place facing City Hall

3. A wire frame with four screens having each of the four seasons in it with the guy and the girl together continuing through each of the four sections e.g. girls head in summer, legs in autumn. guys head in winter and legs in summer, all linking up.

Idea for intro:
An Autumn leaf falls from the tree (close-up) and lands on the ground by Skip Moses' (sm) foot. camera then tilts up at him and then the music begins. sm starts playing
Location: sitting at the bottom of a tree - possibly lady dixon
Mise én scene: has an acoustic guitar and is wearing a checked shirt and jeans.

We are very aware that these ideas involve very intense planning, we need to be organised and start straight away, because it is now autumn and there are loads of leaves about.

Slipknot - Vermillion

This song is called Vermillion by Slipknot.
The video appealed to us for it's motion blur type of effect.

As the girl is walking along, everything around her is moving a lot faster, creating an idea that time is flying past, that she can't keep up with time, also capturing the loneliness, also COULD be a factor in the video.

We intend to do this by using either a green screen or just having a small piece of footage with the girl and boy standing beside each other in the street, i hope we get to use this :D

SOUR 半月

This is another video that's a little bit different!

Amazing Viral Webcam Music Video! MUST SEE!

This is where some of our original ideas stemmed from - I think the co-ordination in this clip is incredible!

Tuesday 19 October 2010

i like the idea of using four screens at once to display each season. We went on a media studies trip to the ipod store and learnt a couple of new techniques to get us started in final cut pro, including this method.

James Morrison - You Give Me Something

James Morrison - You Give Me Something. - Cara

John D'Arcy - More Like Me

I love this video, stop motion is great!

Paolo Nutini

http://www.last.fm/music/Paolo+Nutini

Paolo Nutini is a singer/songwriter from Paisley, Scotland, he is another similar artist we could use as inspiration. In my opinion he has one of the greatest voices you will hear amoung British artists today. His influences include David Bowie, Damien Rice, Oasis, The Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. His song 'Loving You' has the same feel and sound to 'Seasons Reverse' which I love.

James Morrison

http://www.last.fm/music/James+Morrison

Here is the link to James Morrison's last fm page. He is a singer/songwriter from England and I feel his style of music is similar to Skip Moses. His musical influences include Al Green, Otis Redding, Cat Stevens and The Kinks. Some of his tracks such as 'You Give Me Something' and 'The Pieces Dont Fit Anymore' are easy listening and James' voice is powerful and husky.

JOHN D'ARCY

John D'Arcy is similar to Skip Moses and he's from Lisburn, Northern Ireland too. I really like the way this video still has a Northern Irish feel to it, I can tell right away that this video was filmed in a metro bus in Belfast. I like that the video has a very personal feel to it. It might be nice for us to make our Skip Moses video similar to this.

Email I sent to LaFaro

Hey guys, I got your reply on twitter, thanks very much for getting back to me :)

I know Jonny is on tour with LaFaro at the minute so probably doesn't get his emails/facebook messages etc, but we'd love to get some more info on Jonny if that's ok, specifically on Skip Moses. We're doing some A-Level coursework for our media studies class in Rathmore Grammar School in Belfast and we're hoping to make a music video for Seasons Reverse (we have permission to use this from Small Town America, we hope to have your permission too :D). If by any chance Jonny could let us know more about Skip Moses or anything, throw us a reply :)
If we get some info and end up making the music video, we'll send you a link sure :)

Thanks,
Aisling, Catherine, Eilisha and Cara

Email from Andrew Ferris (STA Records) to Mr. Tierney

Hi Cathal,

Please email charlene@smalltownamerica.co.uk and request our latest label CD sampler with your full postal address.

Any of these Smalltown America songs on the sampler can be used by your students for their projects.

Cheers,
Andrew

This for us means that we have full permission to use Skip Mose's song 'Seasons Reverse', as this was on the CD that was sent out to us.
We were worried that we couldn't find sufficient information on skip moses in order to create a certain theme but then we realised that this is a good thing. We can create a whole new identity and use our own ideas.
We did try to contact him by emailing him through his record label - Small Town America Records, Facebook and Twitter. We were granted permission to use his song from small town america but got no other useful feed back. I realise that Johnny Black is busy at the moment touring with LaFaro so he may not have the oppertunity to reply.

http://www.last.fm/music/Jonny+Black

This web page provided me with information about some similar artists. I looked up the bands on youtube. some of their videos are below. I think this is useful because we can use it to see what kind of image skip moses uses and what type of theme we should go for our video.

Furlo

FURLO are a non-biological family of musicians based in the Derry/Limavady area of Northern Ireland who have recently signed to ‘Yogen Records’. They are an indie jerky five piece rock band, who have been described as ‘Killers Meets Feeder or The Cribs meets Bloc party’.

Boathouse

A rock indie group of seven people from Belfast.
The name began to spread, and their reputation went before them as a band. As BBC’s Stuart Bailie said in an interview, are all about the intensity live with “eyeballs bulging and perspiration on the forehead”. Gerry nicely replied, “like a minor beating around the head”.

Captain Kennedy

Captain Kennedy, a 7-piece folk rock band from Northern Ireland, are earthy, their music visceral. The past couple of years have seen the band establish their position on the Irish music scene with gigs in high profile venues across the country, including a sold-out Mandela Hall.

Julip

JUlip is made up of 3/4 of Belfast rock-post-rock band Tracer AMC (Jonny, Alex? and Keith), Niall Harden, and singer/songwriter Barry Peak, formerly of Torgas Valley Reds and Backwater.

Scott McLean

BIG WHITE LIMOUSINE: a guitar rock instrumental with a driving
beat and the feel of the open road.

LaFaro

LaFaro are a 4 piece rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They consist of Herb (bass), Jonny (guitar and vocals), Dave (Guitar) and Alan (Drums). They have released material through Field Records, including a 4 track EP and a split EP with Public Relations Exercise.

Their track ‘Tupenny Nudger’ was voted the greatest song of the last 5 years by AU magazine following BBC ATL voting them ‘Band Of The Year’ TWO years in a row!

The band have supported acts such as Fighting With Wire, The Pogues, And So I Watch You From Afar, Winnebago Deal and Ash.

Frank Turner and Jonny Black - I Want to Break Free (live)

I can get the impression from this video that Jonny Black is more of a free-hearted artist and he enjoys sometimes the simpler stuff than anything else, so it would be good to incorporate that easy-going, relaxed feeling into our video and theme.

Jonny Black - Kick Out The Jams NvTv Acoustic Session

This is Jonny Black aka Skip Moses. He talks in this video about making a break on his own apart from LaFaro, and I think that's when he decided to to create Skip Moses, although he doesn't mention Skip Moses yet.

La Faro - Tupenny Nudger

The guy from Skip Moses is originally in LaFaro. There is no videos for Skip so I decided it would be ok to put up a few examples of LaFaro's music videos so we can SORT OF take examples from his other material. (:

BBC Article on Skip Moses

I just found an interesting article on Skip Moses, which explains a lot to us about him, who he is, and what else he does. Skip Moses is really Jonny Black from rising band LaFaro, which is interesting because we alreay know a bit about LaFaro who is also one of Small Town America's bands.

Here's the article, and a link can be found below too.

Jonny Black is an occasional legend who plays with LaFaro and helms a fascinating side project called Skip Moses. He was once a hired guitar for Martin Corrigan and he seems to like the process best when its veering on the edge of irreversible meltdown.
With LaFaro, he uncoils the great riff and makes a peculiar lyric into some towering notion of folly, In this respect he has inherited some of the Andy Cairns dynamic. He cultivates the stories of the local eccentric, the trainee psychopath, and he imagines them at their worst. Like the kid who survived a house fire but was fused onto a synthetic settee. Or he pictures the scenes in some old dive bar and expands the vision into a horrendous vision to out-brutalise Brueghel.
Then again, his Skip Moses skin gives Jonny the chance to revisit Elizabeth Cotton and Freight Train, a meditation on death and the rumble of the Number Nine engine. He plays his Mississippi delta blues with grace and feeling and you sometimes wish that he was more outwardly ambitious and ruthless. But then again, that was never the way of LaFaro and it may not prevent Skip Moses from leading us into a land flowing with milk and Mudhoney.

Skip Moses

I tried to find out some background information about Skip Moses. This proved to be quite difficult as he isn't widely known but I found a few articles with his name mentioned.
With this information we can determine what type of image we need for the video and decide what particular audience to target.

Monday 4 October 2010

We have decided on Skip Moses as our artist and Season's Reverse as our song.

Skip Moses also played in a gig in the Menagerie last night, unfortunately we didn't know about it but at least we know he's still playing away :)

David Karsten Daniels & Fight The Big Bull 'Smoke' Official Video

The use of light is interesting in this video:

Frightened Rabbit - Set You Free

Another example of how simple lighting tricks can be extremely effective - Torches, strobe and disco lights. We might consider using something like this in our video. :)
